I think quite a few of us are asking exactly the same question. Just how do you go from mostly great to mostly ok overnight with no explanation.
It would be great if someone from Google would jump into one of these threads to shed some light.

The conspiracy theory seems to be that it's to do with ebays return but I think it's more likely just teething problems with the new system. It would be great to have a really open announcement if that is the case.

IMO the system just got "smarter" and is now correctly labeling junk as junk via a poor QS. I'm not sure what you mean by "no explanation"...it's a dfynamic system that constantly changes. That "explains" how QS can change from day to day.

None of the professional paid search managers I interact with are having widespread QS issues.

I think that is a bit harsh! There is definitely an issue with QS that has a lot of people wondering what is going on (on other boards as well as here).
I am not a pro and I don't have widespread issues either, but that is because the drop in QS I experienced had almost zero effect on my campaign - I have given up trying to find a rational explanation and just accept that is the way it is.
If I saw some "day to day" changes it might help that explanation but in my case, no matter what I do, it just does not happen. I've changed keyword grouping, ad text, destination pages, display urls and it has all made "sweet F.A." difference to my QS. But, my campaign performance is improving
so, actually, I do not give a toss any longer! Still, it is a mystery how I can be ranked no 1 in natural listings for certain highly specific terms and only get a QS of 4 or 5 for them in adwords.

I have yet to get above a "poor" rating on any of my ad groups! Still getting clicks, but I have tried a number of varations and none of them make Google happy...
