How to identify your/my target audience?

Does anyone here have any good tips on how to identify your target audience. What is my target audience?

I need some clarity for my site, and I think the best way to do it is to know who is visiting or would want to visit. I run a road rage site. Visitors rate their road rage for the city they live in. U.S. cities. It's a unique in idea for its category so people are not always sure what to do in my site. I want them to rate their road rage. I am still a new guy so no direct link to my site. It's available through my profile.

    Any help?

Sounds like a teenage type website :)

Try a poll to see whos visiting?
There is no way of genuinely identifying your audience is there.. lol unless you required them to have a picture sent to you before entering your site :)

If you had baseball products, you sure wouldn't be selling it to a golfer now would you?. You'd sell it to a baseball audience instead. Thats targeted audience.

The same for niche products. Well you get the idea. Do you? :)

    Hey Buzz,

I get the part that if I owned a Baseball Uniform store my target audience is Baseball Players. It would also be very easy to find the baseball teams to market.

Here is what I am getting at. Let's say I wanted to go to a convention to promote my road rage site. What convention would you suggest I go to? Every one seems to have the occasional road rage spurt so is my target audience everyone that drives a car? I know I would love to hang a banner over the freeway pass.

So is my target audience everyone that drives a car?

That's a start. Anyone who has to sit in traffic daily...people driving to and from work during rush hour, delivery drivers, taxi drivers, truckers...etc.

    Your audience:
-Police officers (trying to find the hotspots)
-Elderly people (complaining about everything, but not online a lot, website needs to be easy to use and click itself)
-Teens showing off how cool they are (not the customer I'd go after either)
-weird page surfers (the guy bored at work looking for a distraction)
-someone who just got cut off in traffic (bingo! happens to millions every day, I'd go after them).

So I would actually consider a section to report about someone elses roadrage instead.

The way to find out the demographics of your audience is to poll or survey them. There are various ways to do this. Offering an incentive to complete the survey is faily typical.

Promoting "Road Rage"? ... or a solution to road rage?.

Well go where it starts on the road. Cars, Trucks, Rigs, Bus, etc. The Auto Shows and Auto Conventions.

By the way, is roadrage.com your site?

25,500,000 websites for road rage ... pretty interesting numbers.

Hey camp, I see your website is a PR5 and thats pretty impressive. I also notice that you're not using contextual advertising like adsense, adbrite, etc. I mean you dont really have to but those are goldmines especially when you're at PR5. I would atleast use Adbrite, they're really good.

Would you exchange links with a PR0?

    Buzz,

I actually use text-link-ads.com on my home page. They are located under "Suggested Sites". Pretty happy with them because they sell the space, and have been keeping it full. They also pay within 1 week after the month ends. I then added the "Raging Links" section myself at the footer of every page. Easy enough to run, and who needs a middle man? I am slowly starting to fill it.

My biggest problem is the casino ads. They made an offer to good to refuse, but it will take me six months to complete. Can't wait until they are gone. It has got me thinking about removing the banner ads all together though. For sure the header one. Probably replace the sky with text link ads or something.

Anyhow, I am willing to exchange links with zero's. Top referring link partners get listed on my top friends list of every page. I do check periodically to make sure the link is there, and that I am getting a few hits (3 or 4) a month. I try to keep my link list tight. It's good for me, and it's good for the ones with good links to me.

You are working the problem backwards. You FIRST identify who you want to target, then brand your website and your marketing to capture that market.

That would solve who to market to problem then. When I started this site it was simply to vent my own road rage. The site kind of created itself, and I have't really targeted a market yet other than people from the U.S..

Ah - I see! Well I will definitely visit your site. I would love to post my thoughts on what I'd love to do during my own moments of road rage.
For example: For the idiots who play vulgar hip-hop through bass-thumping speakers... I wish I had an 'auto button' that opened a set of colisium size speaker horns that blasted 'Sweet Home Alabama' back in their face.

For the people who stop at a light leaving a 2 car gap in front of them... I wish I had an 'egg launcher'.

For the people who slow down to '2 miles per hour' when making a turn.. GRRRRR never mind --- my thoughts are too violent.

    Good luck with your site!

Love the site and the RoadRage map especially! it would be great if you could plot all your data over a month like a heat map. You know, perhaps there is some serious tie-up you could try with an insurance co. for your long-term data.

You know, you could offer a prize for the best original road rage video (people could take these vids on their cell phones - from the passenger seat, of course ;) ) and have your users rate them to choose the winner. You could then post them all up on Youtube and similar sites with a little splash ad for your site at the end.

Hey the video contest is a killer idea. I am going to do that for sure. I'll have to do something for the pictures as well.

In regards to revenge try turning your passenger side windshield wiper to the right. Don't get shot:eek:. I ran a poll not to long ago, and over 30% said they carry a gun in their car!
