    I wrote an article at

    http://ravisblog.com/?p=1654

that might help you save $$$ on control panels. It is useful if you have a limited number of sites and if you are not into any shared hosting business. With vpses available for $10 these days, spending another $7 on cpanel could easily be looked at as waste of money.

If you think you are good at linux are can learn fast, this method should become as easy as creating a site with a control panel for you.

A comment here or on the blog if you like the post would be appericiated. Thanks.

It is nice article but I think it lacks instruction how to install and configure FTP.

I have recommended sFTP for this as ftp might not always be secure without a proper control panel.

If you wish to allow server access for few other people which you dont wish to allow them SSH access, just access for files - it will be more secure to use FTP and not SFTP.
If FTP can be secure with control panel, then it is possible to setup it same without control panel.
