I wrote an article at http://ravisblog.com/?p=1654 that might help you save $$$ on control panels. It is useful if you have a limited number of sites and if you are not into any shared hosting business. With vpses available for $10 these days, spending another $7 on cpanel could easily be looked at as waste of money. If you think you are good at linux are can learn fast, this method should become as easy as creating a site with a control panel for you. A comment here or on the blog if you like the post would be appericiated. Thanks.
If you wish to allow server access for few other people which you dont wish to allow them SSH access, just access for files - it will be more secure to use FTP and not SFTP. If FTP can be secure with control panel, then it is possible to setup it same without control panel.
