If I short my URL using "http://www.shorturl.com/" it is going to make any difference in SEO ? I am putting URL in forum signature but it only supports 255 character signature but my URL is quite long.

If your URL is short enough, it will be user friendly. I'm not sure about it's effect with search engines.

Redirected URL will probably not give you any point for PR and ranking for when Google crawl where your site is posted with shortened url, they will account the domain of the url. If your site has dynamic URL then learn how to convert them into static with shorter url and with keywords in them.

It's okay if the shorten service does a 301 redirect.

You could also use your htaccess to shorten it yourself.

The use of short URL doesn't pass any value to redirect site.

    Just checked - shorturl does not use a 301 redirect - it's a 302.
Avoid it - most other url shorteners use a 301, which is what you want.

Using of tiny urls in the signatures will not fetch your url any value for your serp or pr. It could be used in email marketing where you can place the short url so that the email reader will not be scared to open that particular link. If your site has dynamic urls then better you could convert them to a seo specific url (short url, like internal pages) and promote those urls. This will help for a better serp.

This is just wrong - use an url shorterner that uses a 301 redirect and it acts like any 301 redirect. it's just shorturl.com that is a problem, because it's only using a 302.

If you want use it in terms of SEO, then use a URL shorterner that uses a 301 redirect. Google also comes with a URL shorterner very soon. Hope, it will helps us.

Honestly, better to simply shorten the URL permanently. You are going to lose something by not having your keywords in your URL, but if you can't build links because it is too long that isn't going to matter much.

So much of IM, to me at least, is having to decide between the least of two evils.

I think that backward links to your site should be increased. If you are using a tiny url than use only it everywhere. hope that this may work for us.

In SEO point of view short URL is best compare with long one, also try to add some keyword in your url.
