    Getting links to your website from popular websites is one way to build up pagerank.

    If your website is good and you have showed it to a few people then chances are that they would be sharing the link.. if your website has a unique service and growing then if picked by a news website you get a high quality link which drives up your pagerank and traffic.

    do not buy back links Google will take away any rank you achieve by doing it that way. Exchange links with sites in the same niche and try to get some higher PR's
