How to go from niche to general in SEO?

Ok here's the deal I've been targetting a key term for sometime. I've reached the top of msn and yahoo (in the sandbox over at the Big G). Most of my anchors coming in are a targeted to a niche version of that key term. We'll say "Blue Widgets". I have over 4,800 links coming in with this anchor or related such as "Blue Widgets Portal" and "Widgets in Blue". Now I think I have some coop weight to spare and a little time for link building I want to go shoot my goals higher and target "Widgets" where the top 5 sites have between 5,000 links and 1,000 links. Yet, I'm #55 or so for the keyword "Widgets" in MSN (#7 in yahoo). I'm starting to change some of my anchors and stuff over from "Blue Widgets" to "Widgets" yet it seems kind of odd and my link partners shy away from doing this as my site is only related to "Blue Widgets". What other tips can you provide me to help get my sites ranking up for a sitution like this? Do you think directories would mind if I did say "Widgets Portal" as an anchor and then in the description say "Blue Widgets"? For you guys that have been in this situation what did you do? As always TIA

Hehe, if your interested in doing some link exhcanges with my "Blue Widgets" outdoor related pr 5 site let me know.:D

I would say you could start by changing some of your title tags that you want to rank for "widgets." For example, the title is probably something like "Blue Widgets..." If you change this to "Widgets - Blue Widgets..." then the search engines will place more weight on the term widgets since it shows up first in the title tag, yet you still have your "blue widgets" phrase in the title as well.

    This could be a start.
