How to get your site listed in FOUR times faster in DMOZ!

Simple: suggest the site to the right category.

I've been doing some statistical analysis of the suggested sites that get listed in the ODP, and reached these conclusions:

    • Sites that are submitted to the "right category" (meaning the category where they ultimately get listed) get listed four times faster than those submitted to other categories.
    • Only 31% of the submissions that get listed are suggested to the "right category".

Important note: the results above apply only to those sites that eventually get listed. It is not necessarily related with the likelyhood of a site getting listed. Also, they are the average for the whole directory; the exact results may vary between categories.

Now, the obvious question is "how do I find the right category?" Sometimes that can be hard, but please do your best to follow the submission guidelines and submit only to the single best category. It is especially important to submit to the most specific category possible for your site, because submissions to categories that are too broad will wait much longer before an editor looks at them and sends them to the right category.

Some hints: look at the sites that are already listed in the category that you are considering, to see if they are similar to yours in topic; conversely, if you know of other sites that are similar to yours in topic, see in which categories they are listed.

This exact post is on 3 other webmaster forums.

Please try and focus on adding original content, not just posting for the sake of increasing your post count.

    Hi

You are absolutley right. To get listed quicker in DMOZ, go for smaller, regional catagories. These have less of a backlog currently.

I know with some of my categories, I list sites the same day they are submitted (provided the meet the guidelines).

Dont forget, that DMOZ editors are there to list sites, not to decline them. Make sure your title and description are good and descriptive, not keyword enriched (your just giving the editor more to do)

Make sure you read throught the submission guidelines before submitting, very important. Check through some of the categories to get a good idea of how to write the titles and descriptions and make a good job of it.

Dont forget, these are human editors - not robots.

    :)

    Good tips though.

I tried submitting to the smallest category I think we could apply for, so am now just waiting.

    Fingers crossed.

There is something more about dmoz. Dmoz is a backend database that Google and several other search engines use. Here u can see how it works.

Dmoz is owned by Netscape. Netscape is owned by AOL. So that tells you right there that DMOZ is a must to get into. If you can get into DMOZ, you do not have to pay to get into any of the other search engines, because most engines will use DMOZ at some point.

The only problem with DMOZ is that they are human edited, and not a spider which crawls your site, or a bot, which is the same thing. A human editor can reject your site in a sec if they don't like your way, if you are too much competition for that editor, or if your links are not working, if you have a construction page...etc.

When Dmoz was exactly started it was real quick to get in as such currently in its sister directory Chef moz.

You can try to be an editor, but they reject 95% of the applicants.

One can not be get in it but still one can try for the same and one might be able to.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Google updates it's ODP clone once every two years, and most of the others now use the google backend, which does NOT include DMOZ to power their searches...including AOL and Netscape!

Are there paid directories or search engines that also pull from DMOZ? That is most certainly a new one to me.

The list of sites to NOT include is certainly larger then the list to include, and your short list of reasons hardly scratches the surface, but thanks for putting that up.

DMOZ was started to help promote the sites of the founding editors and still promotes those sites today. In fact, such promotion is automated and out of the editors hands. Skrenta, one of the founders has admitted this, and not only are there still over 10k listings for TOPIX, but he is still an editor. That fact that it was quick to get into at one point was one of the reasons that it was soooo popular and rose to the top. The fact that it now takes ages to get listed is why it's falling to the bottom.

Become an editor and help reduce the amount of sites listed in the queue (and hopefully get your own site listed!)

While there is a high rejection rate, that rate is normally an issue with the applicant and not the directory itself. The Editor Application system is likely the best thing within the project.

    • If you fill out the application and do not get word back in two weeks you are allowed to inquire into the status of your application.
    • When you are rejected you are given a reason for the rejection. Work on correcting that issue, and re-apply.
    • Try and try again! (there is no limit, though when I say try, actually try)
It is important that you read the submission guidelines, especially the parts about title and description, before you apply. As if you can not get those right, then you'll never make it.

For a few pointers check out this forum: DMOZ Editor Applications: Are you qualified?

I am not trying to Increasing my posts. The reason for putting the same information here is that many would not click on the link assuming that I am trying to increase the traffic. This way who doesn't click on the link will keep him /herself away from the information.

I just wanted to share what I know and I hope that it is not bad to share the knowledge. :) You may also come up with something that is rarely visible by peoples like us. :p
