Our user-based directory, shrugle, has gone live. While some of you submitted their website for free already (many thanks), we believe this can be much more. Only how ? www.shrugle.com
You must add your directory in the lists of directory submitters like Website Submitter. You can submit your directory for inclusion on the submission page.
I like the graphic with the mouse wire but it is a bit cryptic. Most folks won't hang around for more than 10 seconds if they can't find what they came for.
Very valid comment, design for the user. People want to hit a website, find what they're looking for, and access it. I spent a bit of time looking at this site, but normally would have just moved on.
First of all, thanks for all the replies. Much appreciated ! To answer on some of your comments : I think you directory could use a search box and a full list of categories on the main page -> We tried a search box earlier, but that did not work well. A full list of all categories is available. Click on ‘updates found in category..’ .. here all categories are shown which have results in them. The homepage only shows the most up-to-date 10. Most folks won't hang around for more than 10 seconds if they can't find what they came for. -> That is totally acceptable. We all do the same and I think even 10 seconds is too much. Directories are not designed to hang around on too long anyway, are they ? The fact that you might do, is because you do not know what site is up-to-date or interesting and thus keep on clicking all the others. What will happen on Shrugle is that people visit the homepage, check for a category of their interest (and check back later if none found), check sites (mainly new ones due to its recent update and 2, 3 star-results) and move on. The list of categories is limited and so far I checked I saw no subcategories. -> The limiting categories is done on purpose. Many directories have hundreds of categories to choose from. It takes forever to decide what category you are going to choose, to find out your site is placed in a wrong category. I rather visit a few more sites (which could be of my interest) placed in less categories. If required we will add new categories. However, maybe you have some suggestions (like what categories do you now miss) we can consider ? In the meantime, keep on voting & submit your site too !
The past previous posts were more related to reviews. But how can we get more sites to submit to shrugle ?
MARKETING, its ALL ABOUT MARKETING u need to get around, buy advertising, banner slots, sig links, themes, etc so that everyone knows abt your existance, then the submissions will come naturally
Thanks mate. Any good sites you particular use ? .. and can you tell me more about these sig links, pls ?
just go to the link sales forums and u'll see plenty of ppl advertising spaces, sig links, etc. That will be a good platform for u to get started... of course submission to quality directories, to show that you are serious abt your site and that you take time & money to invest in them....
It's just a bit unusual. You have voting icons like StumbleUpon, and it's not your usual directory format. Perhaps that's why you're not getting so many submissions?
We wanted to make it different compared to other directories. Indeed, maybe people need to get used the this idea (like they needed years ago with Google) .. good point. Nevertheless, submitting is for free and you would people to expect to submit their site anywhere (or not?).
Any encountered problems should have been solved by now. Please feel free to keep on submitting for free. www.shrugle.com
Actually, no. If it takes too long to submit, for example if you have to go through a complex registration procedure or if it looks like it will take a while to figure out how it all works, then a lot of people will not bother. This is why the Vilesilencer free directory list has a seperate list of directories that require registration - most people prefer to skip them. Also, are you planning to link to your submit form in every single post? Just put it in your sig.
First of all, I must say I am very pleased with all the positive feedback you give me. Most likely there need some work to be done on the explaination part & we'll go from there. I shall continue with the sig, but just thought it was more easier & friendlier for people to have the right links in the text. No harm meant. Thanks for the advice anyway ! www.shrugle.com
The 'about' page is adjusted and soon the subscribe proces will be easier, more simple. More on that later. Let me know what you think so far, will you ? Thanks www.shrugle.com
