i don't think there is one general answer but let me give you an example: i have 2 online stores: one sells RC Helicopters, another sells sexy clothing. The sexy clothing store is doing good, has good traffic and is making money. the rc helicopters store is not doing well so i guess if your site is interesting. also, the amount of traffic is directly proportional to the marketing work put into it.
One of the best way to get traffic is via link building. You do some basic link building techniques like directory submissions, social bookmarking, do-follow blog commenting, blog commenting on high authority sites, forum posting, etc. Target 2 keywords at a time. In 3 months time you will see your site creep up in SERP of google and yahoo. Eventually, when you have done enough link building for that keyword, that keyword will come on the first page. Remember, target those which have less competition and more searches. Then, go for other keywords. Also, ensure that you have at least 150-200 pages of high quality unique and attractive content. Make the topics in such a way which are a little controversial and present it in a unique way. For all this you will need time and money. If you work around 8-10 hours on your site, you will see your self getting some 10k to 20k people a days via google and yahoo itself from various keywords. A week is not a long time to wait at all. And if you consistently post articles you'll have a consistent stream of new material out there to bring more traffic in.

well some are long term method which will take few months and some are short.submitting to social networking site take 2 min making links take few weeks.link building is necessary as it help in higher page rank .
I couldn't say it better myself I am currently link building with these tecnics. But it's a long way... it will take some time with a budget of 4 hours a week.
there many ways to get traffic to your website a few ways are article marketing press releases seo blogging social media ( twitter, myspace, facebook) video marketing ppc there many other ways but pick one or two methods and master them.
It really depends on the site. Since some sites can have success using traffic exchanges and others are best for seo look at your niche and thinkg about the type of people who might buy from your site. Then try to understand there purchasing habits
Update your blog regularly with new unique content. And also try social bookmarking, directory submission, blog comments. that will work.
there is a way to get around the week wait. first before you start your article marketing- write 10 articles ( on what ever you like.) Do not put any links. Submit and you will get bumped up to the next level - where you dont have to wait the week or so plus to get your articles approved.
for new blog, just comment and comment and comment in others blog, the traffic surely will come to you.
