Join groups in Facebook, Myspace, or Orkut where you find computer science students. Make sure that before you invite them your forum has valuable info attractive enough for new members to hang around.

Get rid of all the spammy links in the footer. Spam attracts spam.

I think the best way is to MAKE SURE you have an active community.
If you can get some friends to post with each other, and make the discussions interesting, I think people will join --

but I bet RectangleMan knows better.

Your page was taking 10+ seconds to load - I finally gave up and closed the window.

    Lets discuss targeted traffic:

As an example for targeted traffic, I promote my forums mainly by video blogging on youtube, metacafe, dailymotion, yahoo video, myspace, break.com. Even though I have signed up on around a dozen video hosting sites, I focus on youtube. I can post the same exact video on youtube and myspace - the youtube video will get thousands of views, the myspace video might get a few dozen views.

Here is my youtube profile - http://www.youtube.com/user/survivalistboards

Since I am a youtube partner I get to brand my channel with a banner. The banner on my youtube channel is the same banner that I use on my website - and the background colors are the same. So if someone looks at the youtube channel and then goes to my forums, there will not be a big change.

Lets do a little comparison between the way I promote my videos and the possibilities at your disposal.

Example video that I made a couple of weeks ago: Wilderness survival Quiz Notice that I offer no direct information, except a description of the plant. I then challenge the viewer to post their answer. A link to the discussion thread is in the description of the video to the right. That video has received over 5,000 views in a week and one day. These types of videos, the ones that ask for a response from the viewer get a lot of replies and a lot of hits.

Your site is about computer science, I would suggest that you start an account on youtube and start posting videos about the topics you cover. Whether this is about networking, security, programming or anything else.

I have seen a lot of youtube channels that cover computers. Some of these were done in a professional manner, and are a credit to the creator.

Youtube is the third highest source of traffic to my site, and the number one source of targeted traffic. At one point, people from youtube were 60% more likely to create an account on my forums, as compared to google generic traffic.

    Definitely interesting stuff.

One of the biggest problems is getting a good editing program or recording program etc. Once you solve that, that's not a bad method.

The thing is, something like wilderness survival is unique enough to gain you lots of hits. But there are so many computer videos, that someone making a youtube account about CS will most likely fail.

I use my point and shoot digital camera and windows movie maker. Most people already have everything they need to start video blogging. You dont need expensive equipment, or software.

As for the amount of videos already on youtube - you have to be different, alike, but different. In some form or fashion you have to make your channel and videos stand out.

I started making videos after watching another guy in his videos. There were some points that he did not cover, so I made sure that I included those in my productions. His videos were alike in a lot of ways, the videos had the same setting, or area - such as his house or around town. So I make my videos everywhere from my house to the woods.
