I think Forum posting and Blog commenting in do-follow site is the best option for creating back link and traffic both.
I was so excited when I saw this trick. But, I can't get it to work either. I am inputting this, exactly, changing yoursite.com to my domain name. related:www.yoursite.com/ http://www.yoursite.com/ All I get is this from Google; Your search - related:www.xxxxxx.xxx/ http://www.xxxxxx.xxx/ - did not match any documents. Suggestions: Make sure all words are spelled correctly. Try different keywords. Try more general keywords. Try fewer keywords.
I suggest you to create your own free websites like web2.0s without links and with unique and relevent content to your site. After indexing of these free sites you can put your sites link in them. So this is an easy way of getting relevent link from any page and sure it is long lasting also.

Ironically, the fastest way to get backlinks is to 1. Feature all your top competitors on YOUR home page. 2. Tell them about it. 3. They will link to your page because you said great things about them. 4. let the page age for one year. 5. replace their names and phone numbers with yours. Google: iPhone App Programmers ... you'll find our Sparkah.com website. That's how we did it.
The first criteria when buying links should be the relevancy of the web page where your link will be placed. Buying links based solely on PageRank is not recommended. There are many linking factors that contribute to high search engine rankings and buying links solely on PageRank will not accomplish your goals. This is why it’s highly recommended to purchase links on relevant backlink pages. Relevant backlink pages are pages of other websites which have a chance at reaching your target market. If you have a real estate website then of course advertising on other real estate websites or real estate sections would be a good choice but advertising on other related sites such as: mortgage sites, moving company sites, local area guides, etc, would also be relevant to your general theme.
Blogs and forums would be great source of building relevant backlinks, but make sure that you are contributing first.
Analysis and data collection is a prerequisite to any SEO effort. Do analysis of website, blogs and forums in your niche. Also do analysis of your competitors and look from where are they getting their backlinks. Do posts and comments on such related forums and blogs and extend relationships with people in your industry.

To Get relevant backlinks do relevant forum posting, blog posting and social bookmarking and write good content.
I completely agree with you.i do the same method.i used to fallow my competitor sites in search engine results and using backlinkwatch.com i found there backlinks list.
I suggest you look for sites and blogs that are in the same niche as yours, or are relevant to your site's articles, and see if you can do a guest post there. If you are able to find blogs related to your site, then participate in those to get relevant backlinks to your site. Hope that helps. Have a good day!
Do relevant forum posting, blog posting, article submission, directory submission and social bookmarking and write good content.
The thing is you have to link to related sites, it would help of course but you have to concentrate on quality sites and quality content, I would say.
