More quality links is the answer to get higher PR. To get quality links get more links from related sites.

question do you make more money with a PR5 or PR5 than you do if your site ranks in the top 10 on google. Answer no.

Focus on ranking well not PR. Press Release get you high value backlink fro PR6 and PR7 sites. But more importantly you'll rank better in the SERPS

I've had a couple hit five on their first updates, at least two I expect to (and predicted to) hit 5 with the next update, and one currently at 6. I don't waste my time submitting to directories. I don't write spammy press releases just for backlinks. I don't do article marketing. I don't buy links or really spend much, if any, money on marketing at all. Yet it's rare for my sites to not hit at least PR4 on their first update (with exceptions generally only if they were launched right before the update). Here are the rules I live by:

    1. Focus on writing quality content that I'm both passionate about and knowledgeable about. I don't put much effort into specifically trying to write link bait, but people do naturally link to quality content.

    2. Don't just build one site... build a small sort of network, where they're different but in the same or similar niche (for example, I run a music webzine, blog, and directory). Interlink them. I don't really care what people say about not linking from sites hosting together. I do it all the time, and my PR never suffers.

    3. Network with people in your niche (bloggers, influential professionals, etc.). Earn their trust, and they'll do more for your marketing efforts than money could likely buy you.

Personally, I make more from the higher PR than the higher rankings, simply b/c of private link sales. So answer, yes. It depends on the site obviously, and of course ideally you'll have both.

As for press releases, that's not true. They don't always give you high value backlinks, b/c frankly, those links don't say on PR6 and PR7 pages, most people honestly don't know how to get a direct link to their site on that home page for even the first day b/c they don't use the tools effectively, and they're shortly buried on low-ranking, non-relevant pages. Press releases only lead to "high value backlinks" if you get legitimate news coverage in high-ranking news sites, niche sites, or blogs.

    Interesting suggestion.

Do you do this on the same domain such as

    domain.com/blog
    domain.com/directory
etc or separate domains and interlink them?

The reason i ask is that i have one domain that i have several theme related sites on, such as blog and ecommerce etc and they all seem to do well together and im sure if they were all on separate domains they would not.

With that example I gave, I use separate domains. I used to run a business network on several different subdomain sites with different cms installations, and couldn't get the PR of any over 4. I put them all on the same domain recently when moving them to Wordpress as a backend (like one comprehensive site), and with the links to each of the old domains / subdomains now redirecting to the main domain it went to a PR6. So it can work both ways. But when I use separate domains, that's how the PR jumps nicely even after only being live for one or two months.

I don't agree with it. Many of my sites don't have more than 5 links from PR 0 sites and they are PR 4. Why? Uniqe content. I agree that BL in PR are very important but only this matters

yes, as long as the PR 7 page doesn't have 100 + links. Ideally, if it has 10 - 20 links, you should easily get PR 5
