I was absolutely baffled when my new site starting going into supplemental results in Google's SERPS and soon enough, the whole website bar couple of pages were in there.

So I started thinking 'What have i done wrong?' - My Page Titles were unique, as were the page descriptions and keywords and so was the content. I was concentrating on Content and SEO, did everything white hat, used h1, h2 tags etc and pages passed XHTML standards.

Finally I stumbled across this by Matt Cutts from Google:

I hadn't even though about link building. I had a few links but that was it. All this time I was thinking about what i had done wrong and not about what i could do. But i hadn't done anything wrong. So with this new found knowledge, a little relieved, i set out to go get some links.

And i'm glad to say, that a month or so later and a lot of link building, Here i am. My site www.myspace-customizer.com is largely out of the supplemental results and traffic is up and getting better and better. :D

So there you have it, That is how i got of of the supplemental results. Just wanted to share it to help other webmasters. Hope it does.

Did you build links to your home page or to sub pages also?

I think building links to the sub pages will definitely help them to get indexed and higher PR. If you don't have many links at all, then start with the home page first.

All link exchanges i did were with the homepage. Although i did set up a sitemap page linking from homepage which would mean you can now get to any page of the site with just 2 clicks. Makes it easier for SE's and Page rank should flow through that way...

Plus with viral way Myspace sites work, all pages should be getting more and more backlinks. Should get 2 backlinks per layout used (1 to layout category, 1 to actual layout page).

I've noticed that one of my inner page went straight to supplemental results as soon as it was indexed by Google a few weeks back and i thought 'what the hell' but after a couple of days it got in the normal index. Coincidence is that i was building links to my site at the same time, so what you said must be utterly true.

    Hi Guys,

Around 90 % inner pages of a site are in Supplemental Result.
some pages are got back in main index by just giving a bit change in Title. Is there any other solution (except Link building) to get the same done?

what are the real causes of supplemental?

I think duplicate content may be one of the reasons for getting into Supplemental Results.

I have seen sites with complete duplicate content staying out of supplemental index. And sites with original content in supplemental index. We can not find reasons for that. We have to accept it coz that's how Google works. And we hav no other option till we find a true competitor for Google.
