What have you found to be the most effective way to get people to give you one-way inbound links? This is the single most difficult task I have undertaken. Do you have an email text you have used that has been successful?

One of the most obvious is article submission but also many directories would still include you even without reciprocal links. I think that commenting is tricky practice and on the edge of spamming so not sure if that's recommendable.
I would agree that article submission is the best way. however, is very time consuming and questionable whether you have the capabilities to produce enough articles

A backlink from a highly relevant, helpful and high quality web page is the most effective backlink. It adds value to both the page that is being linked from and the page that is being linked to. What I do to find relevant websites is search Google using my keywords and other related terms. Then I go through the search results to see 1. which ones are really related to my own topic 2. if they are sites on which I would want to build backlinks, and 3. if it is possible to create backlinks from them Backlink building can be accomplished through: 1. Commenting on blog posts or articles. While you may not be able to put in links in your comment, you will be able to enter your website url and the name that you entered will be linked to your site. 2. Posting on forums and/or creating new forum threads. Some forums allow you to put in links until after you have a specific number of posts. Some forums allow links only in your signature. Some forums allow you to use a signature only after you have a specific number of posts. Make sure you check the forum rules first. 3. Submitting an article in which you have links in the body of the article or in your author resource box. 4. Posting answers, such as what you would see in yahoo answers 5. You can get lots of quality backlinks by bookmarking like digg, delicious. Submitting articles to top sites like ezinearticles, articlebase, amazine is good way to get quality backlinks. Blog commenting and forum commenting with signature gives you instant quality backlinks. And you can do directory submission, classifieds.
Buying links might be the easiest, but I am a big fan of three way link trades within related subjects or content exchanges with particular link pointing to other URLS than the ones the content went on.
