I agree giancarlo, however I have found this a very difficult way to establish links as you are not offering anything in return. Unless you have some excellent content that would benefit the website, I would suggest link exchange.

Write some good contents for your site and usually people would voluntarily want to link back to you provided they give you credit for using your articles. It's called link baiting.

Find a list of forums that have do follow links. Register, add link, and submit a few posts. Try to be sensible with your posts as unsolicited adverts and spam posts get removed. As discussed add good content to your site. People may link to your site as a useful resource. Whilst on forums post an incontent link back to your site when there is a relevant discussion.

It is very unlikely that a nice request to a webmaster will lead to any free links back. Would you link to another site just because someone asked nicely?

If you have good content you can as for links and get them. So if you're asking for links and not getting them, then you need to tailor some content for the other webmaster's visitors...then ask for a link to that content.

First check out the backlink profiles of your competitors. That would be a great starting point to find where they have found quality links at. Try Yahoo Site Explorer for the backlink check. You can export the links to a csv making it easier...

The basic way is to join forums with signature, blog comments, social bookmarking. I don't think that if you contact other webmaster and request to add your site on him, they will do that. Most of them also request a linkback or offer you a paid link.

One-way links are wonderful things to have because they increase your link popularity - the number of pages linking to your site. Search engines such as Google place huge importance on link popularity when ranking your site.

I had a competitor ask for a link to his site and another site would link to mine otherwise known as a three way link. The other link was from a piece of #(%$^$^ site with no pr. While I was tempted to send him an offensive email I refrained - too much to do to waste time, but I was very tempted. The moral of the story I think the days of asking for and getting a link from a decent pr site passed. Seems to me the responses suggesting other methods of link building will be more fruitful. BTW I won't forget the competitor and wonder if he really thought I was that dumb? Obviously! :)

You said "PR sites", I guess you mean good PR, like PR4 and above.

Decent one way links do not come easy. Why should they?

    1. Pay for them.
    2. Entice, lure, attract them. (go research 'link bait').
    3. Beg for them.
