How to get on Page 1 of Google

Recently our website www.businessservicesuk.com made it onto page 1 of www.google.com for the very competitive key phrase 'business services' currently around 1.7 billion pages listed.

It has taken around 6 months to reach page 1, so what has been the secret?

The truth is simply I carried out about 2 years research into the workings of search engines and what a site needed to incorporate to be successful. Having gained the knowledge was only half the battle the rest was down to hard work and determination; I have to admit it is easy to become disheartened.

I view SEO as a large cake, the cake contains many slices, all of which are important however unless you have all the slices in place you will never have a full cake. The slices are things like

    1. Choosing the right URL
    2. Having well written content
    3. The use of proper code, no bloat
    4. Good use of anchor text
    5. Sitemaps on site and google
    6. Links
    7. Adding unique content

    Just to mention a few

Most websites incorporate a few of these aspects however only the good ones use all of them in the correct manner; these of course are the ones that are well positioned in search engines.

If you would like more information on improving the rankings of your website, drop me a line at or PM me.

I agree with you, following the tips above will get you in a very high ranked search engine position, content is very important, and you should be careful with duplicate content, I suggest every webmaster makes their own unique content, for improved search engine optimization and it also increases the possibility of re-visiting visitors.

    Thanks,
    Meti

Doesn't 'business services' only get 4,000 searches per month? If so, lmfao, I've got page 1 for higher searched terms in roughly 1 week.

KeywordDiscovery tells me it gets 4000 searches per month, Overture says 200,000. If it's 200,000, good work to you.

    Good job both of you!
That's mighty impressive for such a competitive term!
That's quite impressive too! What do you use to get searches per month?

Congratulations on your success! A couple of questions if I may...

I am interested that you include google sitemaps on that list. Are you convinced that they help, if your site already has a good internal linking structure?

I see in backlinkwatch you have 429 links (including Yahoo directory) - I would have guessed that many more links than that would be required. I have seen a few sites ranking well recently that are listed in Yahoo directory and am coming round to the idea of listing my own main site. Do you think it was beneficial for you?

It would be interesting to know what percentage of your links were bought (I don't really expect you to say, but you can't blame me for asking!)

Congratulations again, hope it brings you lots of traffic and business.

    Cheers

KeywordDiscovery. Overture could also work but has old data.

    Hi Rasputin,

    Thanks for your kind words.

I believe a google sitemap and an on site, sitemap are useful. The trouble is you have to update them regularly. Like I said in my early post, each aspect of SEO is not crucial but to have a well formatted sucessful site you need to work on all aspects.

For a new site listing in the yahoo and MSN directory is key, unless you want to go down the expensivve PPC road.

As for paying for links, I think I have paid for a few, less than £70's worth. I have generally done this because I know the site owners or they have helped me out in the past.

If you understand what is needed a site does not need to use PPC or pay for links (apart from Yahoo/MSN)

That's right Pierce it will take a bit more work to get to number 1, however unique visitors is really the key combined with conversion to customers, so far we are doing very well in this aspect.

One other thing with regards to search engine positions.
Getting there is half the battle.

The other half is remaining there. If you can constantly maintain good positions in the search engines, then you are doing the right thing.

Good luck - but don't think the work is now all done !!

I don't think it is 4,000 as I get more than that per month

    I did miss something out

    I have subscribed to business.com

To clarify my paid subscriptions are

    msn
    yahoo
    business.com

For any new website the weighting from links from these 3 are crucial in gaining a good position.

    I did trich,

I must admit understanding what to do was difficult enough, however implementing it all over a long period of time is a difficult processand mind numbing. People should be aware there are no get rich quick schemes on the internet, only haed work and determination win in the end.
