First thing that you need to focus on is the keyword that you are targetting. For a newbie the keyword shouldn't be too competitive. The first thing that you need to work on is do your Keyword Research.

The best place to start doing this would be:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

here put in the keyword that you want your website to rank for and observer the traffic trends and compitition. This will not proivide you with exact stats but will give you some idea.

Initially don't go for any keyword with lots of compitition and then the 2nd step is

Observer your Compititors: Go to http://www.google.com and observer your compition there website, there content, most importantly backlinks.

For checking them in Google you need to type in search query " link domainName" hit enter and domain name should be without " http://"

In yahoo write " linkdomain:domainname.com" without "http://www."

all then you'll see the trends emerge and from there you can start your SEO Strategy.


Let me summarise it again:

1) Keyword Research.
2) Research Compitition.

Don't reinvent the wheal, follow the compitition find out what worked for them and try to replicate that as much as possible.
