I'm not sure about social web sites like facebook, StumbleUpon etc. They drive traffic but stays too short on the site. Easy come easy go !
There are really 2 main way to do this. SEO or paid advertising. The latter being my favorite and recommended one. EDIT: And yeah, Seqqa's got a point here.
