How to get local Twitter followers?

What is the best way to find and get local people to follow you on Twitter? I have a service based business (home loans) and I would really like to generate a large following in my local area to help drive business. I am working on the same thing with Facebook. Thanks for the help!

I would have to say either put flyers up or mouth to mouth advertising.

I believe it's called twellow.com, but it might be twollow.com. You can put in your locqation, and it will search and find local tweeters.

I haven't heard of twellow.com, but I'd check it out or do a google search for similar services.

I have no idea how you manage your account, but I think you should also carefully think about your content as well. People will want to follow you if you provide something interesting, and they won't if all you're offering is a bunch of links. Social media is really a two-way street and it's really about contributing to the community. (Hopefully you're already doing this...)

Seek others out and follow them. Retweet interesting local posts.

Thank you for your replies! I will check out Twellow and see what other things are out there. Plus, from other things I have read I can truly see how I need to provide content that is worth following. Thanks!

You can always use the search feature within Twitter. Search for "your area" + "your keywords". Now if you live in NJ you can search NJ "kw" or you can drill down to your county, or even your town. Not only that I believe Twitter has added a geo targeting feature if you have a local need for it.

If you have a follower who is living in your targeted country or area, then you can check his or her follower's list.
