I couldnt agree more and for the most part, its the best way to market a site on a free basis. Also keep an eye out for some free directories. Every now and then you'll find a hidden gem.

I think link baiting is like art and coding. Either you have it or your don't. Some feel you can learn it. The best this is to find where you want to bait and watch the pattern of what makes it.

When its a blog its a lot easier, everything is in the title. I made a post titled I Dont Trust Blogging Gobshites on the subject of nofollow which Andy Beard StumbledUpon. In turn I posted again calling him The King Of Blogging Gobshites which resulted with him linking back to me. Although the plan wasn't link bait, per say, it gives an example on how it can be done.
Consistency - write one blog post a day for 3 months and make each post something a target audience of ONE - your friend or your mom/dad would want to read. Trust me - focus on a core audience and write quality stuff - carry a notebook with you and be thinking of things to write about - once you make a commitment to capture your thoughts, you will find more thoughts floating up.

There are many free ways; it can be hard and take much time but they will provide good results. Submit to free directories. Submit a few good articles to major article directories. Bookmark a few of your articles at social media sites. Post at forums. Post comments at relevant blogs. There are even free press release services around there (don't know if they are effective) However I assume that you definitely need some further reading. Each of these methods are effective only if you know how to do it right.
