How? By time :). You have to wait until lazy Google will update your links listing, but not expect to see every link :)

How many to get PR? Not many, really... I don't know, but it doesn't require much.

It depends on the kind of backlinks you collect.

If you get a PR6 link, you may even land up with PR3 directly.

But, all depends on several reasons like Outbound Links by the link giving website, then whether the links are side-bar/wide links or not. And whether those links have quality content or not, and much more.

Using the Link: command in the google search box is totally useless it wont help you at all. If you want to see what Backlinks Google has found then you need a Google Webmaster account. It will show you what links they have found but it still wont tell you what links are being counted. If you are trying to build PR then just go and get as many topically related links you can find with the highest PR. Some SEO experts believe Google is purposely giving crap info using the link: command.

how many links are required to get pr 1?

there's no exact numbers on how many back links to get pr 1. what i can suggest is look for sites that do have a higher PR and make them linked to you. by this, you can get a quality back links because quality back links is very important for google.

    Hi,

Being in link building from last 3 years, I would suggest you following things:
    1. Try to submit the site in some good high page ranked directories.
    2. Do some theme based reciprocal link building and try to get maximum PR-3 and above backlinks.
    3. If this is just 1 site you are having, try to write an article on the theme and submit it into few article submission sites.

See, Google updates it's pagerank after 3 months. So till that time you will have a good number of backlinks pointing towards your site and you will surely gate a good pagerank.

guys, correct me if I am wrong.

Something lots of people overlook with a new site...

DON'T go out and buy lots of backlinks for a new site - Big G will penalise you and you will stay low forever.

Just as mithil said - To get lots of backlinks quite quickly is to submit some articles to the article directories with your link on them.

    Join google webmasters.

Add your site to your google notebook.

Do some social bookmarking - DON'T over do it!

That should get you going organically.

If you have great content on your site that you post over time - Google will come get you regularly.

A link from a good dog theme site linking back to another dog site is worth more than lots of links from directories.

Trying not to 'jump' your link but I have a thread over in freebies that may interest you:

(If I'm not allowed to post this here could someone please tell me and I'll take it off)

    Hope that helps

    Onward and upwards

Yeah i think pr 1 is useless, main thing is ranking and traffic on a website. These all thing can come through Article Submission and Press Release and Submission on some good directories.

    and Link Building............????

Well my table is not 100% precise. You can look at it +/- 2 links
