Another thing I'd like to point out is I did a lot of forum search strings.

In these you can easily add your link in your profile and sig and this is perfectly acceptable.

It's better to focus on relevance then anything else imo.

Getting relevant back-links from related .gov and .edu sites is like having money on the bank, due to the authority that they provide. But try to stick on the related subject. No good to get a link for a health-related site when the site is about foreign policy...

I agree somewhat. Relevance is only one of many factors including:

Site's authority (what makes these .EDU or .GOV links so valuable)
Dofollow (obviously more valuable than nofollow)
Anchor text (anchor text with your keyword is better than irrelevant or no anchor text)
Out bound links (a site with a lot of links leading out on it already, or a spam site, is obviously worth less than a site linking only to you)
Relevance (as you have said having your link on a relevant site is worth more)

This is a big reason why I'm providing a .EDU blog creation service, you can get your own blog on a .EDU domain with articles about your niche and get really really rare and valuable backlinks in this way.

All said though the links that can be found with these search phrases arae of course beneficial and a great addition to your current link building strategy/campaign.

I don't disagree. But those factors are true for all backlinks. The true value of a (dofollow) backlink from .edu/.gov is basically the site authority+relevance. The other factors are up to you... (for example, by not posting on a page with hundreds of links).

That was always my understanding, that they have a higher reputation in the eyes of Google because of the type of content they have on the sites, i.e. academic.

I have seen a similar video regarding this from Matt Cutts, where he says that a .edu or .gov or .com domains doesn't have any special value over one another.

I may be wrong but i'm sure Matt Cutts said that Edu/Gov links no longer carry the same weight as links from other domains

Sorry - just saw someone above has posted the same comment

You'll never get a link to stick they'll be heavily watched those forums from link trolls.

This is a very handy tip. Just found a PR7 blog using it, which is very nice indeed. :)

But if it's true that they are moderated more vigorously, I guess we have to consider the quality of our posts. :)

You can all believe what you will but being that Matt Cutts works for Google disinformation is a big part of what he does. Just like saying that nofollow links have no value, sure they are worth less but I have ranked sites with 100% nofollow links as tests. He says stuff like this to keep people from spamming .EDU sites and manipulating their placement in Google search results.

    Some food for thought.
