Well you could optimise your pages for MSN or yahoo. Or you could run an adverts campaign on adwords..oophs meant overture!
I can see where you are coming from. Over the last 2 weeks they have been messing around with one of my sites rankings. One moment, I am ranking then a few days later I am not, then ranking again and so on. I think having links on other similar sites is a good way to get traffic. ALso, if you get picked up by lots of sites and blogs i.e. with a link in their content you might start getting some good traffic levels. Of course, don't forget Yahoo. It provides very decent traffic as well.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned stumbleupon yet. It's free and it works for sites with good content.
Adwords Overture Posting articles Exchanging links Submitting to directories Submitting to tops and other traffic generating systems More, more, more... Everything depends on your skills/preferences.
In my case this is not true, and I believe there are others who are not Googlistas. Google is a distant third for my traffic. Yahoo 58%; MSN 26%; and Google 10%.
You cna get traffic form a lot of places other than Google. Link building is one of the best ways whether that from Directories or what ever. The one thing is most of these methods take a lot of time. If you build enough links then you should not really have a problem keeping a stead flow of traffic. But nothing works for me like a number one spot in Google.
Just wondering, why do you want to get good traffic without Google? Isn't the objective to get good traffic and if Google is the culprit that assists in delivering on this objective, is that a bad thing?
I think the issue is that it isn't a good business deal to be dependent on google for traffic. Yes, if you rank well it will probably give you the majority of your traffic. But still, if a decent percentage of your traffic comes from other places, it is likely to be more stable. For instance, 60% of my traffic comes from bookmarks people make of my site. Around 30% of my traffic comes from google. About 5% of my traffic comes from stumbleupon. This means that if google were to start totally ignoring my site, I'd be disappointed, but I would still be able to get by. That's good.
For the last 2 months I have got zero traffic from Google, but got free links and traffic from about.com because they found my website useful. I have given up on Google, I mostly rely on alternate methods. They are time consuming but far more consistent.
Thats true, but lets face it, most sites will not be able to start spreading by word of mouth so soon after launching. It takes time to build up. IOf course, asome a few sites are either so good or or very creative that get a good word of mouth, perticularly those in social network sphere.
Kh7, you are right diversity is always a good thing. My thinking was to be objective and to pursue or allow whatever presents the best approach to drive new traffic to a site over the mid and long term. I often catch myself following an approach because I am positively or negatively predisposed to a product or service. By the way I enjoyed reading your SEO tips.
what can make it illegal? There is nothing offensive\harmful neither for surfers, nor for search engines, therefore link exchange cannot be illegal. Still there were many discussions regarding efficiency of link exchange and value of such links for all members of link exchange scheme depending on way of linking and so on. Dig this forum and search web for more information concerning search engines.
Stats show that over 59% of searches done online are from google. And over 74% of USA searches are from google.. Seems fair to me that google has the upper hand. Yahoo is something like 4%, MSN is less. Just my 2 cents...
I think it's a great idea to get work on getting traffic from somewhere else besides Google SE. I'm stuck with Google/Yahoo at the moment, but hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll focus more on other sources. Advertising on other related sites is usually a good idea, but costs per click is typically more than proper Adwords ads.
