How to get garlic smell out of wooden cutting boards?

    So,

I just bought a new rolling dishwasher (its a dishwasher on wheels) anyways, its got a wood cutting top the previous owner put on it but it reaks of garlic. I cant get the smell out, I scrubbed the whole thing down for about a half hour with vinegar and steal wool, then poured boiling water on top then oiled it down...but it still has a unpleasant odour to it (no not the vinegar smell)

I heard a suggestion of mixing the vinegar with baking soda and then scrubbing it again with steal wool. I will try that...but I would love some more suggestions if any of you folks can think of any?

    cheers,

    Z

Warm water and salt perhaps? How easy would it be to replace it? That may be your best option.

I'd say just throw it in the dishwasher, but lol ;)

Bleach may work, as it kills pretty much all it touches though with the oder catching qualities of wood that may not work all that well. 1 part bleach to three parts water should be strong enough to not damage the wood, but still tackle the garlic.

Lemon may also work, try to add a bit of sea salt to some pure lemon juice and rub that in. Let it set for a spell, then wipe it off (do not rinse).

Scrubbing the heck out of it with a baking soda paste may also do the trick.

You may wish to try these suggestions in a reverse order...

    Hey,

Thanks for the quick replies I will try your methods later today.

Its not so easy to replace because the last owner used contact cement to put the boards on. So if I can get it out by cleaning it then thats the best method.

I think baking soda first. Then, salt and lemon mixture. and see if that helps.

Thanks for the replies all I hope this gets rid of that smell lol.

    cheers,

    Z

You might also try vinegar and water. Any method, make sure you scrub the heck out of it.

When/ if you get the smell out of it make sure that you seal it with food grade mineral oil or even olive oil to cut the chances that it can happen again :)

Try letting baking soda sit on it overnight.

If you can remove it scrub the piss out of it with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar. 2 parts lemon to one part vinegar. Let it sit over night then do as eruct said coat in mineral oil to seal it.

Baking soda can eliminate almost any odor. Lemon juice is also a good deodorizer.
