Wasting your time posting you link on every blog (even the nofollow ones) is just that, waste of time. I have to agree that if you just spend time only on your own site, then you may find it tough.

Sometimes, you should be trying to get backlinks from high PR sites. This is true for highly competitive markets. In less competitive markets, you should concentrate on your own site.

However, if you concentrate on your own site for high competitive markets, you will find it tough to compete. It will take a long time to get results.
