I have a new website (not indexed). How do I get the first (easy/low value) links to get it indexed? Obviously the links are going to be better than using Google's site submit tool and I don't care about the quality other than it not be no-follow. Suggestions?
You should care about quality. Start creating some nice content and add it to your website. Once you add it you will see that you will create a link which is very important because this way visitors will find you. Now, it depends how your content is structured. Link is the top of the pyramid and many business rank just by adding regular content on their website (do not get carried away though). So get content on your website is one solution. I think the best "first link" would be a listing in the dmoz directory. It is the most important directory in the world wide web. It costs nothing to submit a link to dmoz. So i think this would be the best first link. As for "first links" in general i think it is a good idea to post your link to forums while asking for a review of your site. this way you will also get feedback and ideas on how to improve your site. Another good way for first links is to do some guest posts on blogs and link to your site. Or ask blog owners to do a review of your site. However, the very first thing you should is to include a link to your website in the signatures of your forum accounts.
