I think there is a post on SEOBook somewhere about this - you may want to have a search on there.

I think deep linking is one way to show sitelinks in SERP

Well done, ok out of curiosity do you know how many URL's you had for that search term on page one just before you got the Sitelinks?

I have a PR3 site with sitelinks. I don't think PR has anything to do with it. My site is 1 year old and has been #1 for it's keyword for about 2 months. It had a PR4 before the recent update.

PR has nothing to do with getting sitelinks. It's all about Google's algorithm being able to determine the important parts of your site structure AND if the added links will benefit those using Google search.

One of the sites I reviewed had a pr 3 with 8 sitelinks. It had minimal backlinks to even the main page (600 I think). Some of the other pages in the sitelink had at most ten backlinks.

I won't say that backlinks would not help, because Google has always loved backlinks. But it does not look like backlinks make any difference in some of the sites I have reviewed.

This may or may not be a clue , but if you search "atu2" ( an authoritive U2 site) of the sitelinks that come up , the 3rd down on the right is "ID=4694" , which is a very odd name for a text site link right , now click on this link and check the URL, "ID=4694" , appears on the end of that URL in your address bar , the same for some of the other sitelinks, there's a clue , no ?

Also notice how the primary listing on all Sitelinks is the standard URL, however all the secondry links are a Google redirect no doubt for click tracking.
