its just for universities and other schools that usually get these types of domain extension. so if you don't work or have a university yourself, don't waste your time.
An individual cannot register a .EDU domain name just like they cannot register a .GOV or .MIL domain name. They are special extensions for organizations.
register an .edu domain extension do have the term and regulations which you need to have a register company number or institute university prove from government education center.
You have to be an accredited university or college in USA in order to get such domain name. Not to mention, that foreign universities, not from US, have very little chances of getting their own edu domain.
Yes you can get any where from any domain registration companies, .EDU especially for education (may be school, college or institutions). So which purpose you'll be use that.
Technically, I have not know of anyone who checks this yet. Register at any registrar and you'll get it without a problem unless of coz the name you're wanting is very provocative and stupid. Eg. sexschool.edu
To register an edu domain you'll need to be a representative of an educational institution. You'll need to submit a paper to proof that you're from one.
Go here - http://net.educause.edu/edudomain/ They are the only official registrar of the .edu domain. As mentioned above, you will find the requirements for registering an edu domain.
Thats all it requires. Unless otherwise, .edu domains are purposely for education although some countries us .ac as well.
