I'll try to, but I'm not sure how I'll figure out if it made any difference or not. I think the only way I'll know is if I get a big SERP boost within a day or two of the presell page getting indexed?
I couldn't agree with you more. Due to the nature of one of my sites, I come across a lot of heavily-spammed .edu forums, guestbooks, classifieds, etc, on a daily basis - along with hundreds of other .com and every other TLD. Get a life spammers; it's lame.
if thats what works to get your site number 1 in the SERPS then maybe everyone should spam like that? whats the harm. we should all be on a level playing field
My .edu presell page got indexed, and while I'm not seeing much on Google.com, I'm seeing a lot of movement (moving up about 6-8 pages in the SERPs) on the data centers. Coincidence? I can't say. What I can say is that before this, the trend was running the opposite direction: every couple days I was slipping back a page in Google SERPs across all of the data centers.
Give a student a part-time job (directory submissions, keyword/industry research, etc). Then convince him or her that it'll look good on their CV/resume/profile page on the college, university site. "Here's my work experience, blah, blah , blah." Cue hyperlink to one or more of your projects (URLs)
I'm at student, so I just created a presell page, put it up, and got a link to it so that Google would find it. Become a student. Costs $50,000+ / year at my school, including tuition, fees and housing.
Read this interesting article about .edu and .gov links.. http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/003679.html
There is nothing special about gov and edu domains. Its just they tend to have quality content, backlinks and fewer outgoing links... Appart from that SEs dont give them extra weight. I think even Matt Cutts said something about it on his blog.
A couple of weeks ago I got some .org links for a client's site who deals with travel. Yet to contact .edu links. Will let you know. Regards, Dilip
Update on my situation - Yahoo and MSN still haven't indexed my .edu presell page and I've seen no changes in my SERPs over there. Without getting any new links, Google has moved one of my targeted keywords up by about 8 pages in the SERPs (page 3 rather than 11). Another shows increases of about 15 pages on some of the datacenters, but it hasn't hit google.com yet. update: I just noticed that another keyword that I've never targeted before (but put one anchored link on my .edu page) went from not being indexed (or at least not within the first 200 Google results) to being on page 4 of the results.
One of my competitors for a local portal website has a relative that works in the IT Dept of the local college. He is getting a grattis one way link with a PR7 from that .edu domain. Hmmm - Think I might have to audit a course and see if the prof. can do the same for me!
so clearly the next big business is college students selling links to their "fully optimized" home pages....
and then those same college students getting in trouble... I considered this myself with my student site, but honestly it doesn't seem worth risking my degree over something like a few bucks..
