How to Get .Edu and .Gov Backlinks for FREE

I realise someone has probably mentioned this before, however people continually ask the question: How do I get .edu and .gov backlinks?

What are some words that can describe your topic? For example if your site was technology, then:
    - technology
    - computers
    - telecommunications
    etc.

    Go to www.google.com

Search for "yourtopic forum site:.edu" or "yourtopic forum site:.gov"

For example, "technology forum site:.edu" or "technology forum site:.gov"

This will return all the results from google which are related to a computer forum, and have the extension .edu or .gov (site:.edu or site:.gov)

This does require a little bit of digging to find the gold, but it's well worth it :)

Once you find a couple of forums, make GOOD and DECENT LENGTH posts. I personally make around 30 posts over a period of a month, and THEN add a signature link which doesn't sound spammy. That way you go in more under the radar and it doesn't seem like you are trying to just get backlinks.

I saw someone trying to sell information like this, but stuff that, you can have this from me for free! :D

It's meant to be site:.edu ... my bad :) I edited the original post

I was tempted to post in that thread this method... but I'm too nice :)

I actually got a couple for my proxy... (which has been offline for ages)

    http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=U...+-site:www.thesecureproxy.com&y=Search&dups=1

    And on a personal note:
Please do NOT spam forums! If you were the owner it would piss you off, so don't do it. Do what I said up above (make 30 or so great posts, get a bit of rep up, get in peoples good books) and THEN add a signature link or two. Chances are 1000% better you won't get banned or your signature removed (plus its morally the right thing to do)

They aren't, all domains are the same.

But they look cool having them as backlinks

Also a lot of .edu's and .gov's have a good PR .. not because they are a .edu or .gov but because they generally have lots of quality backlinks.

Why don't people take some time to make some quality content and then getting their link on high PR sites for nothing, instead of paying ridiculous amounts per month for a link?

I had 6 bars of rep and it went back to 5 :(

Seems alot of the 'old timers' (given that I lost 5 points for each one) didn't like me giving this info out. You are right though, it's not exclusive knowledge or anything. I can see kind of why they are upset, seriously though its not like its top secret stuff no-one knows about...

Have to remember though, once we were all n00bs learning stuff from the internet...
