How to get de-indexed by Google

I'd like to get parts of my site deindexed - the parts that aren't necessary relevant to users to my site as I would suspect most people coming onto an online shop aren't coming on to read articles. So, I'd like to get the article pages de-indexed and put more of the focus of the site onto the shop and product pages.
So what's the best way to get deindexed from Google? I've created a robots.txt file to block access to the files, and also have used 'rel=nofollow' attributes on internal pages linking to the article.

Is this such a good idea?

    Thanks

Block those pages in robots.txt, you can also put meta noindex in the head section on on those pages as well.

Great, so I am on the right track afterall. How often will Google attempt to crawl the pages before they are dumped from the index?

They won't try to attempt to crawl the pages if you told them not to.

Just use the robots.txt to stop further crawling of that page...

If you want to remove it from the index login into your Google Webmaster Central account (www.google.com/webmasters) and do the following...

    1. Click your website.
    2. Click Tools Tab
    3. Select Remove URLs
    4. Click New Removal Request

Just follow the directions from there.
