Theres lots, here's a few main ones: 1. Quality Content and lots of it, unique from any other site or page (use copyscape to check) 2. Updated regularly, search engines loves finding new pages and content changes and so do customers, but don't overkill it 3. Quality, high page rank, hardcoded, follow, back links to your site! 4. Site layout, big part on how your site is read as a text only form. 5. Keywords and meta description tags. Something users would type but not have too much bigger competition sites 6. Use some bold tags and header tags with some of your keywords on each page. 7. Deep linking, ensure navigation is easy for the user and no more than two-three clicks away. 8. Social bookmarking. Make it easy to get bookmarked and into social networks. 9. Titles for links, image links are also sometimes good 10. Alt tags for urls, images, etc 11. Site map, the bigger the site the more this will be needed for the search engine robots. 12. Friendly URLS, not overspammy, use hyphens in URLs and file names as spaces. 12. No errors, broken links, or 'under construction' on any pages. 13. Zero viruses, trojans, phishing or get labeled malicous (if hacked resolve this issue fast). 14. Be patient
Make sure you also optimize for your customer. If you are not selling anything, then whats the point in having a website with traffic? And the better the site, the more people will come anyway
Vary your link building efforts and take time to build some of the more difficult links like guest blogging and videos
