Indeed some of these things that other users have mentioned have worked for me as well. This one with sig links in forums have helped for traffic and links. And yes social networks work very well. And yes making comments in blogs help as well.
I got a list of all the blogs in my niche and outright asked them if they'd write about me. The results were OK.
