    There are lots of ways to get backlinks and it is an ongoing effort that is needed. You can get them by writing articles and putting hyperlinks in the content or resource box and submitting these articles to directories. Other ways to get backlinks are RSS feeds + submission to RSS directories, video/audio submissions, pinging the articles, social bookmarking, commenting in forums with a link back to your site in the signature, blog commenting, using twitter and facebook etc etc, joining Blog catalog etc

    Don't mention about the natural links yet, if you DIY, I think blog comment and forum signature are good to building your backlink.

    You will be able to get increase backlinks by posting to different forums. But you also have to consider that by posting on forums, make sure that you do not post messages that look oh-so-spammy posts. Remember, this kind of spammy posts is really beautiful to the eyes of the moderators of forum sites, and then your post is prone to deletion and boom no additional backlink there.
