Yeah, the promotion cause will happen, but it'll take time - like atomicstorm said. Rome wasn't built in a day, so if you manage to get links and advertisements across your signature and into different places then you'll practically force those who want to do it, into wanting to do it themselves, as it'll add value.
If you give the people more than what other directories are doing then they would definitely submit to your site. Allow for them links in the article body and the signature. Increase the reputation of your site and make sure it ranks well for the keywords that you want it to rank for.
