How to get acurate idea of competition?

I am pretty new to this and thought up a formula to find good keywords but I just realized its pretty flawed. My original Idea was to go on Google keywords and find something that had a decent amount of search but with little competition. So what I would do is find something that had around 50,000 searches a month, to find more a niche item. Then to find the competition go on Google and search my term and see how many sites there were indexed. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Take for instance the keyword phrase "cool cars" it brings up around 51 million pages, because it is searching both the words "cool" and "cars" which is how most people search, however if you narrow it down and search for the phrase "cool cars" with apostrophes around it, Google only comes up with 105K sites. If you go back to the broad search cool cars and try to narrow it down by giving it a third keyword such as awesome cool cars, it gives even more result for a whopping 84 million.

So which do you guys take in consideration for evaluating competition. What formula do you use?

really the key is to go with a site you can promote and that you know you can get people to join. relying on google search results is a waste of time especially if the sites ranked on the front page are huge/established for a while

key iis to just start a site that interest you and you would like to be a part of everyday
