How to Generate Facebook and Twitter Traffic for a local business

    Hi

I'm opening up a cafe in a small town in the NW USA soon. It's a bit of a sleepy place, nobody really does any marketing or anything proactive. There are about 7,000 people there, another couple of thousand that come there to work from neighbouring towns, and pretty much everyone knows pretty much everywhere so places just rest on their laurels.

We're going to be a bit more dynamic and reach out to the population, encourage them to come in and have promotions, weekly specials and things like that.

I'm pretty sure that the best way of getting in touch with people would be via Twitter and Facebook. Everyone is on there, even in sleepy NW USA.

What is the best way to go about this. How do we track down the people we want to market to? Is it acceptable to just find people in the area on Facebook and ask to them to be 'friends' with the cafe? Is it better to be a person or a page?

I've never really used Twitter, but how do you track down the local population? Do people on Twitter mind getting bombarded with 'This week's special - Pumpkin Pie Mocha $4" or whatever?

Anyone have a step-by-step guide to doing this well designed for an idiot like me? I really only care about local traffic, it's no use to me having 1,000,000 followers when there are only really maybe 5,000 potential customers.

    Thanks
    Lee
