    I use the Akismet plugin myself, and then disable commenting on posts I do not want comments on. By default I have commenting off.

    You could try using mod_sec and other filtering. What we do for our clients we host.

    Install Akismet plugin. It is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and trackback spam. It keeps your site protected from spam even while you sleep.

    Nowadays, you cannot publish any commenting service without any CAPTCHA control !
    All realiable component for CMS are providing such function.
    With CAPTCHA : No Spam comments
