How to fix a "soft" 404??

    I am trying to add my site to google sitemaps. I have tried the method of using the meta tags, this did not work.

    I am now trying to use the html file as verification that I am the site owner.

    When I do this I get the message that my site was NOT verified because

    "We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Success) in the header."

    So my question is......how do I correct this issue? How do I make the 404 work correctly?

    Please be kind, coding is not my strong point.

    If file verification fails, then meta tag verification should succeed. Try again with meta verification.
