Well, of course, there are some things that a person will not be able to be passionate about: we all are different, aren't we? If everybody is selling "Widgets", then figure out how many like Mobile, Alabama Pale Green Widgets, and become the leader in that niche. (Read that sentence carefully for specific keys)
Creating a site about your passion will beat out these "profitable markets" any day. Passion leads to great content, enthusiasm, and an identity that visitors can relate to. Finding long tail keyword X and putting up some PLR articles may give you some $$$, but it's no way to create a business.
No, I believe this is true. What he meant is that you've got to find a market where there's a demand for it, so don't fear competition. See it as a good thing because people are making money from it. You just have to create your unique selling point. What is your angle in selling that the other person hasn't covered. If you don't think this is possible, then take a look at Hollywood. How many Superman and Batman movies have been made? Each director has his own spin, and some versions are more popular than others, but they've all made money. People keep going to them; so they must be marketable. You should still do what you're interested in because if you're not interested in it, you won't put in the effort. However, if the product you're promoting is not selling too well, it's because there's not much of a demand for it, so it will take longer to make the money. It's possible, but more challenging and more frustrating unless you bring out a very unique selling position.
