Freelance sites have become very crowded and price sensitive. SO that shouldn't be your only focus.
Try social sites and forums. I have got many of my earlier clients from forums. Some of them have stayed
with me for years.

 

A lot of times theres nothing better than good old fashioned networking in person!

 

I've never been in such industry but still, I want to give my point of view.
If you are into design niche then I suggest that you target image-based sites/communities.
Like for example, instagram and pinterest. Every plaftform is an opportunity but targeting the right market is still the best.

 

Are you sure that you use the COMPLETE targeting options on Facebook to their fullest? IMO, Facebook dark posts are the best way out there. I mean, if you are selling horse feed, then you can target 40-50 year old horse owners who live in rural areas, blah blah......You should really re-evaluate how you did your promotion

 

Niche like that requires specific audiences so Facebook advertisement will work perfectly if you want steady clients.

Linkedin is the best way to find out new clients.

 

The best way to get new clients is classifieds ads, content marketing, SMO, e-mail marketing.

i think you should spent lots of times on forums. here take part in discussion. same time try for projects on upwork, guru etc. but here getting project will be tough for new persons. i got my first client from forum.
