I use this free keyword research tool. It shows me Overture keywords and keyword count plus the number of competing sites on Google for the keyword string and phrase. This is done by counting only sites with all the keywords in both the title and anchor. This way you can see the actual number of sites that are trying to optimize for that phrase :)

You can do this manually by using advanced search engine operators but it will take you ages to analyze a decent number of keywords. This tool does it automatically :)

Be patient and you will be rewarded. This tool does a lot of processing and I can I understand that. Try to do it manually and you will get the idea. The tool also now has a progress bar so you will have an idea of how much time is left. I also suggest using the basic tool if you have been trying the advanced one. It shows less information but is faster due to less processing required.

The columns actually have headings and help links. All you need to do is click on the headings and you will get the explanations. Or you can just click on "Help" and you will get the explanations for all the columns. I have taken screenshots of the basic keyword research and advanced keyword research results to show this. However, as you have noted, the headings don't show sometimes.

This is due to a bug I am currently working on but don't worry there is way of working around it... ;) Here is what you need to do to force the system to show the headings...
    1. Search for the word or phrase you want to research,
    2. If the data returned has no headings check the first result to see a word that is very similar to the word you researched,
    3. Copy and paste this word in the search box,
    4. Click the search button.
For example, I tried automobiles but it returned no headings :( The first result was automobile warranty so I copied automobile and searched for it. The results came out as expected... with headings :D

P.S. Just a tip... When the results come out you can collapse the search box to have a better view of the results by clicking the "-" in the top right corner. This is what I did before taking the screenshots.

Go to word tracker and look for things with KEI over 10. Generally speaking I like ones that are 400+ you can find them :D

WordTracker's KEI is not a reliable indicator at all. It's competition data is merely the results from a search engine for the exact phrase. This is NOT your actual competition. Most of those so called competitors are not even trying to optimize for that phrase. These are VERY easy to beat. To find the actual number of competitors we need to query only competitors who are trying to optimize for that phrase.

To do this we need to query only sites with the keywords in their title and anchor text. To find KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) we then need to divide the demand for the keyword by the competition. My advanced free keyword research tool does all this automatically for you. See a screenshot of the advanced keyword research tool.

Keyword Elite is what you are looking for. I use it and it works fantastic.

You can search Ask, Overture, Google, Meta Tags, Yahoo and Mispelled Keywords. It will return 100-10,000 results if you want. You can modify and customize the search results by adding other words to the beginning and end. You can import and export.

The list goes on and on...

It shows KEI, broad matches, phrase matches, exact matches, top bids and can search Google Adesnse, Miva, Yahoo and Enhanced.

And the best part is once you find the right keyword it will build you an Adsense page automatically with your own templates.

Its really slick, check it out
