By far the quickest way is to use a keyword tool. I can whole heartedly recommend micro niche finder, see the link in my signature, has more info about it, screenshots and stuff. I use it all the time, works great.

If you need something quick, you may lose accuracy. For quick solution, you can go for Adwords tool, but if you need more accurate result, I recommend to use several toll, including free and paid tool.

well you could buy microniche finder and that could do it for you, or you could just go to google.com and type in your keyword in "keyword" and it will give you the answer immediately, it doesn't get any quicker than that really.

Search for the keywords you have choosen and see which gives you the smallest amount of hits unless you want to pay for a software package that'll do it for you?

If I'm understanding the request, I think coolcow wants something that spits out low-competition keywords, rather than having to come up with a keyword and then use a tool to find out if it has low competition. The only tools I've used are Keyword Tracker and the Google Adwords tool. Are Micro Niche Finder, Market Samurai, etc able to just spit out a bunch of keywords when given a certain number of competitors?

With micro niche finder it works just like the adwords keywords tool except it will also show you the number of competing sites and the strength of the competition. It will essentially show you a list of relevant keywords and shows you how much competition. It will save you hours and hours :)
