What are the methods to find Google penalty on a website other than search traffic? Whether the site is penalised or note?

    thanks

Check if it ranks for its own domain, also check for pr that used to exist and now shows none.

Finding out such ways is not that easy but as to what experts says- if your website is getting some traffic problem, lost in PR, lost in number of pages indexed etc are some symptoms of penalty from G...Not sure :(

You would need a decent amount of data logged over the past 6 months or so to really be able to tell. even then it is hard to say... did you do something questionable and now are concerned?

I would say search for the page with a site: directive and see if the page(s) you are concerned about show up. if they do, there is probably no penalty assessed or a minimal penalty. i am unaware of any method that will directly show penalties applied (if google really even uses a penalty system).

I disagree...there are a lot of reason not specific to that. If you have traffic problem check site before you blame G. It's either there are site problem that hamper bot to crawl or a broken sitemap that hamper G to index a site. Optimization come to play.

dbi is correct used the site: command.

There are numerous types of penalties, some related to content(lack of/overoptimization/duplication) and some related to links(both inbound and outbound). What are you seeing with your site? Some details might help us determine what type of penalty you are seeing.

It is not that much easy to find what the exact thing made google to penalize your website. The symptoms are your indexed page number will be reduced and the SERP of keywords would drop.

check the quality of your pages collected by google. If the quality decreases sharply in short time, you're penalised.
PR is another point but it takes longer time to be detected.

Ranking Will Go down In SERP!!
It may also lead to the penalization of the full website u can check out that by "site:www.example.com" If their are no links you have been blacklisted.
