    Hey, Manish,

This is how I normally do it.

First, I get a list of keywords around the topic of my site.
For that, I create a kernel list simply from the top of my head and then get synonyms/related concepts using different keyword research tools. At this point I norally use SEO Powersuite's Rank Tracker, because it's integrated with several keyword suggestion tools.

Then, I check the search volume for each keyword on my list. The search volume is, in other words, how many people have actually searched for the keyword on Google. To get the search volumes, you can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool.
But be careful, the competition it shows is for PPC, so, if you're doing SEO, you'll have a assess competition differently.

After I know what the most popular keywords are, I normally group them into several groups, because there are different sections/pages on the site as a rule, each dedicated to its own topic. I also separate branded/non-branded keys.

And, finally, I begin assessing competition for the keywords that seem the most attractive (that get a lof of monthly searches). To assess the competition, I'd type the keywords into the search box and analyze the top 10 results, sometimes the top 20 results, it depends. I'd look at their link profiles, their site structure, whether they have a blog, etc.

So, in the end, I get the final list of keywords that (A) have pretty high search volumes and (B) I think I could hit the top 10/20 for.

Great explanation by Kianu42. And he pointed out what no one else who recommended the Google Keyword tool mentioned...the competition you see listed in the Google Keyword tool (the Adword tool, same thing), is for *advertiser* competition...it shows how many people are paying Google Adwords to advertise for that keyword. So if you see a lot of competition in the Google Keyword tool, that's a good sign for you...it means lots of people are bidding on that keyword.

You just need to do as Kianu42 suggests to see how hard it will be to rank on the first page for that keyword, by checking the sites that are already there to determine if you can beat them.

Apart from what others have said here, I recommend you to pick "lucrative niches", profitable industry-related activities. For example: banking will pay you more than bicycle parts-related ads... travel will pay you more than gifts...
