Google Search Insights and Google Adwords Keywords finder are quite useful, but this will depend on your needs.

What you can do is find hot keyword phrases from the current time. For example, you can go to Google Trends, or Ebay Pulse to see what is hot currently. After you have searched for a term that you like, you can plug it into Google Adword's Keyword Tool (or even better Micro Niche Finder or Market Samurai). This can be a way to ensure that you get the hottest terms as of your current time.

    Hope that helped!

yeah, Google Keyword Tool is helpful a lot. This tool is just like the Overture one, but it's got a lot more things to do on it.

Look at your competition and what they are doing. Figure out how you can beat them.

Check your competition and their keywords, check what keywords are getting a lot of searches, choose keywords that aren't too difficult to rank high for (less competition) unless you want to shoot for the stars and dominate a keyword that gets a few million search results on google, and finally write your keywords accordingly.

:)A great way to find good keywords is to do a litttle spying on your cometition. Type in the search engines whatever the subject of your website is. Click on a few of the websites that are ranked first page. This will be your top competition. Go to your toolbar and click view then scroll down and click page source. This will give you the raw html of your competition's website. Look for the phrase "meta keywords" or "meta name keywords" (use the find search to make it easier). This will give you the keywords your competition used to have his/her website ranked first page in the search engines.

It is interesting about search effect: use of unique words or combination of well known words? For example, what better in semantic use: http://www.stat-all.com or http://www.habrahabr.ru?
