link:mywebsite just redirects you to Yahoo Site Explorer. It shows you the total number of backlinks/inlinks/inbound links Yahoo has found and not deliberately de-indexed. It doesn't differentiate between dofollow and nofollow links.

Do not buy links! And don't bother with reciprocal links unless they offer potential high click-thru traffic or are an authority site. Get yourself relevant one way inbound links.

Actually, using the link:<website url> feature in Google only provides you with a small representation of the actual links Google sees, not all of the backlinks Google sees.

If you want a full list/count of backlinks from Google:

    1. Login to Google Webmaster tools.
    2. Select the site you want from the list (only works if you actually own and authenticated the site)
    3. In the left menu, navigate to Your site on the web-->Links to your site
This will bring up a the full list.
