How to FIGHT click-attacks ?

Discussion in 'Guidelines / Compliance' started by Keano16, Jun 1, 2006.

    Hi,

    Continuing from WMW Forums...

    We are having lots of problems with click-attacks. It all started in the begining of this year. We had attack one day and that was it.

    Now in last 10 days 3 of our sites are under attack. Attacker is obviously someone close to us, that knows what are we doing and how are we doing it.

    We even suspect who is he but we will not mention his name because we are not 100% sure.

    Problem is we cannot do anything to stop him... When we removed ads from our pages, he started to attack us using Google Cache versions of our sites.

    We have informed Google about this case, supplied them with server logs, his IP address, network name, etc., even reported him to his ISP, but what else is in our power?

    Biggest problem is we probably know who is clicking but we cannot do anything. He is member of WebmasterWorld Forum and already banned from Google AdSense...

    please help us and give some advices.

    thank you very much, in advance!

    For me it will tell me a lot about him if you can tell why he was banned from AdSense?

    That is the problem, yes. And what G! says about that?

    If the IP is the same, block him or try also to give him a cookie and when user has gor cookie, no ads.

    But if he want do that, he will! Maybe you can stop him with friend talk.

    I hope I helped you a little.

    Bye.

    I was suspicious about some activity the other day. Told G and they said they'd monitor :)

    You shouldnt need to take your ads off? G should be able to fix it for you... In my opinion anyway :)

    Just as long as you tell them it should be OK :eek:

    With Google cache, you can't do anything!!! With .htaccess and his IP addresses, on the site you could ban him using .htaccess...

    <Limit GET POST>
    order allow,deny
    allow from all
    deny from 168.103.51
    </Limit>

    @frisby
    He was banned because of fraud activity (clicks and traffic)...

    @sunnyaros
    Yes, very scary. We should make some suggestion and send email to Google, for example signed by 1000 publishers. That would made impact in Google AdSense department.

    @AnsonM
    Google also said they would monitor my situation.

    I now have very much fraud clicks (500-1000 daily) but Google has given me 0$ of revenue for that...

    There's plenty of suggestions around in this forum to prevent click fraud. Like only showing ads to the same IP 3 times, then replacing them with Yahoo or Aff banners for 72 hours automatically.

    I have banned his IP address already, but problem is he is visiting my website using different IP's from Google Cache, and I cannot restrict that.

    Fact is one: If he wants to click, he will click.

    Problem is: Google does not protect us (publishers)... :(

    Then don't rely on IP alone. Block his entire geographic area, profile his behaviour (User Agent, Browser, OS, ISP), drop him a cookie etc. etc. there's a dozen of things that can help you come to a 'risk assessment' for a particular user and based on the 'score' you can choose to not show ads.

    Don't assume the role of the victim so easily, take matters in your own hands if it bothers you so much.

    I don't get your attitude. You come here for advice yet you already accepted your fate as a banned user whilst you haven't actually done anything to help yourself.

    What about the suggestions I made?

    If you can demonstrate to Google you have done to your max ability what you can they won't ban you as eaisly.

    You have mentioned geographic area, user agent, browser.

    Problem is he is crazy (probably because AdSense banned his account) and he is doing everything to screw my AdSense account also. When he seen I blocked his IP address then he just started to make damage using Google Cache version of my web.

    I have blocked 2 range of IP's and reported him to abuse service but they even don't know THEIR OWN range of IP's so I can block all of them...
