Based on my experience exercising does work. However I have to do it for one month before I could see the benefit.
I know its not healthy but if I can't sleep and I have a busy day the next day I down about a litre of cider. That usually does the trick
My suggestions are Having a comfortable bath with warm water . Having some milk, it helps to sleep . Doing some yoga if possible before go to bed .
In my opinion,you can follow one of these steps- 1.Do prayer for half an hour. 2.Listen the music you like very much. 3.Read any book that you do not like at all.Really it will work. Thanks!
Non medicated? Meditation helps, but that's hard for some people. It helps just to humm in your head, and really try hard not to think of anything but the sound. Do that for a half hour or so and you could fall asleep without noticing.
Don't force yourself to fall asleep. If you've been trying to sleep for more than 30 mins, get up and do something else. Read a book or listen to soothing music.

Reading a book might be a downfall sometimes.... Esp when you're reading a thriller... you always want to read on to find out more, might keep you more awake than sleepy
