Its really useful if site is having inbound links but how can competitor will exchange links as it will affect his business drastically? is there any way of link exchanging???
no one will offer you a link on the front page for free. it will rather be some separate "related resource" page with 100 other links on it, the page that is rarely visited and does not have much traffic or SEO value

there is two way link exchange and three way link exchange. in two way link exchange you request to the another site's webmaster to keep your link by giving a reciprocal link by emailing them.
all i can say is one has to be careful on link exchanges cause if u link a site which is a spam site in googles eyes then u r own site also gets busted
